Harold and the Purple Crayon!!

Yesterday I read the story Harold and the Purple Crayon.  We used this story to discuss the different lines in pictures.  We looked for diagonal lines, straight lines, squiggly lines, zig zag lines and curvy lines.  The children practised drawing pictures and using different kinds of lines in their pictures.

At the light table!!

Outside with sidewalk chalk!
At the writing table the children started with a line and they had to see what picture they could create!

Here 2 students created a clock and a chicken!!! They made several pictures and creations and made their own book!!

Some students were viewing the video Harold and the Purple Crayon and were drawing the things that Harold drew in the video.  The picture above is a picture of the apple tree.

Bubble Painting

Mrs. Oshar supervised the painting area as it was very popular today with bubble painting.  Each child had their own straw and blew into the container.  They pressed their paper over top and what beautiful colours and designs.

Blowing the bubbles!

Pressing the paper!

The end result!!!

Building Structures!!

Miss Megan (our student teacher) came up with a great idea for building structures.  We cut up the pool noodles and added toothpicks and off to work they went.

The students built monster trucks, airplanes, cars, sunglasses....just to name a few!!

Bean Seeds!!

We planted bean seeds on Friday and look how fast they are growing.  The children water them daily and make sure they are in the window to get lots of sun.  We have noticed the roots are starting to grow.  The children will be taking them home next week to plant.  Wander if anyone will be able to eat their green beans for supper one night!

Painting

Some of the students put shapes on a big piece of paper and dabbed paint around them with sponges.  They became very creative and made pictures using the shapes.  When we took the shapes off, look what we could see!!!

Adding the shapes!

Dabbing the paint!

Taking the shapes off!

The Water Cycle

We have been discussing the water cycle this week.  We have learned many new words.  We had beautiful weather and the children were busy outside doing some experiments to see what happens to the water.  They poured water to make a puddle on the pavement and then drew around the puddle with sidewalk chalk.  It didn't take long to see that the water disappeared.  The children were discussing how the water evaporated.  Ask your child about it!!
We painted the school with water to see if the water would evaporate.  It did!!  The children were using these terms: evaporated, liquid, gas, water vapour!!  WOW!!  Encourage your child to use these words at home too!

Seriating and Drawing

The writing centre has been very popular this week.  The children have been seriating pictures of how to build a robot, a flower, an ice cream cone, a house, a bunny, a ladybug and a butterfly.  Then they try to draw the picture!!  WOW!  These pictures were done independently.  Some friends even added more details!!

Balance Scales in the Classroom!!

We have been using balance scales at the water and play dough centre this week.  The children were weighing a variety of objects at the water centre to see if they thought it would make the boat sink.

Some of the students were putting an object on one side of the balance scale and they had to come up with a ball of playdough that weighed the same as the object.

Balls!!!!

We took a variety of balls outside to see how we can use them.  We had a discussion about the balls before we went outside.  We know that a ball is a shere.  You can't kick some balls or you will get hurt.  Basketballs are hard and great to bounce or dribble.  Jamie can dribble the ball 68 times in a row!!!

We threw balls!!  We kicked balls!!  We played catch with the balls and we even try to aim the ball to get it in a target against the wall!!

Planting Trees!!!

Mrs. Caderette has been busy getting the whole school involved with planting trees in the school yard.  We did our part by helping to put mulch around the trees!!

This Week in our Classroom!!!!!!!

We read the story The Little Red Hen and the children have been retelling the story.....

At the blocks!!!

At the sand table!!!

We have been discussing sinking and floating in our classroom.  Below they are making predictions at the science table using a variety of objects.  Does it sink or float????

Below, some of the students are testing the balls to see if they sink or float.  We added a scale because the children wanted to see if the ball was heavy or light.  We are discovering that if a ball is filled with air it floats.  A small golf ball sunk!!!!

Ordinals!!

We have been practising singing the song There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly.  We listed the animals in order.  We are practising using ordinals.  1st was the fly, 2nd was a spider, 3rd was a bird, 4th was a cat, 5th was a dog, 6th was a cow, and 7th was the horse.  Below are some friends retelling the song.

We are using ordinals in another story that we are reading.  The story is called Inside a Barn in the Country.  It is a rebus story with 11 characters.  Below the children are re-telling the story using ordinals.

We are placing our friends' pictures in a line and then we are writing their names next to the correct ordinal.

Artists!!!

Hailey made a list of colours that we would need at the painting centre to re-create the crayon picture.

Our colours are ready and some of the students tried to re-create the crayon melting art at the painting centre.

Hot Crayons!!!

We predicted what would happen if we used a blow dryer on crayons and most children predicted that they would melt.  They were right!  However, we learned 2 new words today.  The wax became so hot that it actually turned into a liquid and made a puddle.  Once we took the blow dryer away the wax became solid again.  We now have it in the freezer and we are waiting to see what happens.  Some children predicted:
1.  It would freeze and turn to ice.
2.  It would be cold
3.  It will stay a solid because it is cold. WOW! Great job Natasha

Some children noticed that it looked like art work or a painting.  Tomorrow we will put it at the painting centre to see if anyone can replicate it!!!  Check back!!  We will post the paintings!!
